Hey, I'm a pessimist, what did you expect me to write?

It has already been promised that all AI planes will be there and free to download. You only pay for cockpits / flyables. So it's definitely not like you will only see the same two planes all over the place, in that case hardly anyone - including myself - would be interested.

My main concern is what this means for modding, I don't see how that would be possible, and that's a big minus for a flight sim.

Hopefully they open up the campaign data so if we can't make new planes, we can at least improve the gameworld. I actually care much more for the quality of the campaign than quantity of airplanes. Even one very detailed plane in a living, detailed gameworld is so much better than a hundred of mediocre platforms and linear missions. I hope they realize how people crave for a campaign like the one in Red Baron 2, and fear the scripted missions approach.

I realize that the AI planes will be there, but if you only have those announced planes you can only make a rather uninteresting French/German '17-'18 campaign

Planes were designed and became obsolete very quickly in WWI, even if you skip the less important aircraft (Like the Fokker D.I/II), it will still take a while until you have enough planes for a full 1915/1916-1918 campaign (Fokker E.III, Albatros D.II, Nieuport 11, Airco DH.2...)
