I've got the original IL-2 Sturmovik...and need help.

I want to run this on my windows 7 home premium laptop, but when I put the disc in, the autorun doesn't start and the setup won't run. So I am confined to a dinosaur windows 98 desktop in a cold room. Help please!

I have this problem a lot. Have you tried looking on the disc and clicking on set up and install there? It usually takes a few minutes to kick in to install, it's a real pain.

^Yep,

Happens to me too on Win7, you just go to My Computer right-click your DVD drive and click Open then either Setup.exe should work or that other one called a.exe if it's IL2 1946.

As above, My Computer, DVD drive, Open, right click setup.exe select run as administrator.

Ok. I'll try again. I really like the old IL-2. I got it in the strategic simulations commanders pack thingy with Silent Hunter 2 and Flanker 2.5. I started a new German fighter career the other day and I got 34 kills air and ground already.

Let us know if you got it sorted
because I've got the original IL2 (not 1946) lying around somewhere so if it doesn't work I could give it a look.

These days the fully patched all-packs-ioncluded 1946edition of the whole series can beh had for 5 bucks, if one is lucky and visits the right store at the right time.

For it, an update was made available some time ago that improved the very predictable AI in dogfight.

People really wanting a challenge in WWII-dogfighting, go for the old package Battle of Britain 2 with the latest patch. Battles are monumental (hundreds of planes, if wanted), physics is better, and fighting is tougher. Speed feeds back on stick, and enemy is very difficult to spot. It is more realistic and, again, difficult.

I'm in the process of running setup.exe as admin. Is there a patch somewhere to update this to 1946 version or do I have to pay for the 1946 version seperately?

1946 has to be bought indepenantly and is not compatible with the original Il2 (although pretty much everything of the original Il2 has been transferred to 1946)

You can get IL2 1946 for $9.99 from GoG.com:

I got the game working. I copied every file from the disc to a desktop folder and patched up. Then I just ran il2.exe

1946 is even cheaper on Amazon, and you'll obviously use the SUBSIM.com link...

I'd recommend plumping for 1946 over the original, it's like a squillion games in one - alright, a handful - and then get HSFX5 (and patch) and UP3+DBW, all three are supermods, HSFX is great for online and UP3+DBW are best offline, I think HSFX and UP3 both come with JSGME so mod control is easy. UP3 needs to be (iirc) there for DBW to run, but worth it.

Will 1946 run on windows 98? Because my flight stick won't install and calibrate correctly. I'll have to keep playing on my 98 desktop in the cold room until I get a new flight stick. I don't want to pay for a new one yet.
