Could you provide links to the video that you watched? I think you use the bearing number between 0 and 180 as-is. As I think he needed the angle to his bow/course. But I hate to make a liar out of myself, so I better confirm. It's been a while since I watched them. And I don't know where it was. Probably Youtube!?

in fact, in Berbster's directions you'll see "Our ‘First Calculation’ will be 360 – 258 = 102 degrees on our ‘Left Side.’"

Yeah, because he is using protractors to draw the bearing lines, he has to point one leg to his course. The angle shown in the corner is always a positive number. So for port/left bearings he has to resort to calculate the remainder of the sonar bearing to 360. 360 degrees minus the bearing.

I just watched his SH5 hydrohunt tutorial ( ) where he has only starbord side targets. There he never does this subtraction. As it would basically be bearing-0. Which is trivial.
