Default Hi from a newly joined noob!

Hi guys! I've just started playing SH4 have a some really nooby questions if thats ok?

Is the Damage control team treated as a seperate compartment? Do you just fill it up with new crew members? or do you allocate existing crew members into it when the need arrises (like in SH3)

Also, as I'm new to the game & starting in an S boat, is there a trigger for getting mods to your boat or the chance of the command of a different class of boat? Im not vey good at the moment and havent survived long enough to find out

At the moment I'm playing stock v1.5 with pacific enviroment 4. One day
when I'm a better skipper (and feeling braver) I'll try one of the mega mods (so many to choose & so little time)

Thanks for your time guys & stay safe

Sure! It's always okay to ask questions.

Depends on how much micromanaging you want to do. I just fill the Damage Control Team slots with extra crew, and try to look for a couple that have good gunnery skill levels, so they can man the deck gun, and, or, the aa gun(s).

When upgrades become available, you will see them in the options menu in the office but they are date specific like SH3. Cut down Control Towers, and newer boats will be offered at the end of a patrol. So always save the game close to your base. Especially if like playing the Asiatic Fleet(s), because when newer boats become available, you sometimes get shipped to Pearl, and then have to transfer back to either Fremantle or Brisbane, depending on where you were prior to the transfer.

It gives you option to reload the end of the patrol, and then turn down the newer boat until it becomes available for your location. Pearl got the new boats first, and from there, they filtered out to the other bases around the Pacific.

Instead of just stock, as it is buggier than an epidemic outbreak, you may want to consider Webster's GFO mod (Game Fixes Only). It's like stock, just without the personality crisis, that stock has.

What I always hated about the stock game though, is that if you took passed the test depth red line your boat crushed. I have used TMO for a long time, and you can take the boat passed test depth. Will your boat crush? Yep. At what depth? Well if find your boat's crush depth, well, you won't be going back to tell them what it was.

Anyways, good luck, and good hunting!

Oh, one last thing, as a piece of advice, if you get stupid photo ops missions into what are heavily defended harbors or bases, it's best to blow them off, as the risk isn't worth the renown reward you get. Just go sink stuff, and go home. Take your points gained, and call it a good patrol. Those kind of missions would be unrealistic anyways. Same for cammando and spy missions. If they are deep into some place like Tokyo or Manila Bay, it takes way too long to get in, and out at a decent time frame. And if you surface and go too fast shore batteries pound you into scrap metal in minutes, as they are like Davey Crockett firing a rifle.

Welcome aboard.

As stated the stock game is bugged, load a supermod. IMO TMO is best and there is a version with an easier AI or use GFO. You'll be glad you did.

For sub upgrades, I meant the upgrades options, by clicking on the sub on the desk.

About when you get upgrades. The best thing to do is complete as many missions as you can in your first three or four patrols.
Complete one and call it in and get another. Just hope they aren't insertion or photo recon missions for the reasons given.

The more missions you complete the better chance you'll get upgrades when they become available.

Thanks guys for taking the time to help out

I downloaded Websters GFO fix and what a pleasent surprise: a picture of Catherine Bell on the captains desk (I used to have the same one as a desktop background, many pcs ago . I gave it a trial run earlier & it looks & plays much better - no more accidental torpedo launches for me . Oh & i didnt know you could raise the SD rader

TMO is next on the list, I've just flicked through the manual -WOW! What a nice peice of work that is

Stay safe

Glad to help!

Yes, actually, all the megamods are great. Just depends on what you are in the mood for. I like them all myself for that reason.
