Default quick (but odd) question

GWX 3 + Commender / Dec 1940 in DH53 / 15ms, no rain but overcast.

There i was just patroll'n along at 30meters when i get a sound contact. Came up to parascope depth and moved in to ID it. Well it was actually 3 neutrals. 2 were medium merchants and the 3rd was a smaller merchant or cargo ship really struggling in the ruff waters and way behind the larger ships. Looking through the attack scope i saw an explosion near the smaller ship. I cycled through the ships in external view ( < > ) for a closer look at the ships for fires or any damage. I thought what the what, but the were all fine. Except for the smaller ship that was still struggling along in the ruff waters of course. What could that explosion have been ?

Damage can be caused by the weather and the game engine simulates said damage by rendering smoke and fire.

If you see it from far enough away it looks like St. Elmo's fire. Kind of a nebulous green flash. Pretty cool actually.

Does that also account for the apparent flames roaring out of the top middle of the PT boats? Usually it's only a fairly dense plume of ruddy smoke, but oft times it's overt flames.
My first thought was that it's the guys who wish they were flying fighter planes and have removed anything from the engine that impedes their speed. Or they're just over-redlining the engines a lot. Or just a way the game makes them a tad more visible so I've got something for the flak gunner to shoot at....
Inquiring minds (?!?) wanna know.....
