Default Am I crazy - Planning a Cold War SH4 mod

Well, am I?

I have no prior SH3/SH4 modding experience.. but I've done many graphical skin modding in previous games, and I've done a little light reading on modding the config files of the game and might see how feasable it is.. but yeah, just had an idea after reading up on guys wanting to make a U-Boat mod from SH4.. got me thinking.. darn thinking!!! Look where it gets me.. :p

Anyway.. consider this a teaser.. I will update if I do decide to head down the path.. (and will probably start calling for assistance )

The easiest part would be the exteriors...ship models and skins. Replacing what's there with 1970's-80's models.

Next in line of difficulty would probably be the map.

Most difficult of all would be the interiors. Trying to completely change what's there to a nuke interior and merging that theme with the current control scheme. That would be tough, imo.

Mission scripting wouldn't be too bad with guys like tater who really has a handle on that end of things.

But, half the fun is the challenge itself. And success is biting off more than you can chew, and handling it.

You're definately in for a long bit of work though.

It would take a tremendous amount of time! The team wich works at bringing uboat to SH4 has hardly done any huge step forward, it seems, and it requires less tweaking has it covers the same game period/technology.
One of the problem being we don't have a proper 3d model importer/exporter for the moment (skwas with its silent 3ditor is working on that)

I think that's going to be the phrase on my tombstone when I finally leave this world.. just add.. 'sometimes' to the end and it's pretty accurate.. :p

Thanks for the support guys.. kinda makes it sound not as impossible as I first thought.. but still a long road.. meh.. we'll see.. we'll see..

Though, you could pull off an early Cold War scenario or two without having to re-create all the game assets...
especially if you could pull SH3 vessel assets over...

In late 1949, the USS Cochino, SS-345, a Fleet Submarine, carried out the first submarine spy operations of the Cold War. The Cochino was fitted out with a snorkle and was one of only a couple of diesel subs used in this manner...

Yeah.. but I was thinking something more modern.. actual fast attack subs.. fully tricked out homing torpedos with vessels having sufficient countermeasures.. (gotta see how Sub/Sub warfare is happening in the latest GWX mod for SH3 first!).. ballistic missiles too.. I wonder.. :P

Major work dude... But hey, if you could pull together a team, which would be my suggestion, why not?

You know what... it might be easier to take Dangerous Waters, and alter the graphics to look like SH4.

Same end result. :p

I've never played DW.. (don't hit me!!!).. all I know is that the level of modability inbuilt into SH3/SH4 makes things really handy.. not many games offer as much 'End user tweaking' acess.

I'll sell you my copy of DW. I bought it a year ago, and I'm almost half way through the manual already. :rotfl:

lol.. and that's supposed to make me feel more confident that it'd be easier to mod that into a SH4 type Cold War game? hehe

if there wouldnt be the modding restrictions of Sonalysts then i think there allready would be a lot of mods....
Would be interesting if u can manage to get a modern type Submarine into SH4.
especially the Sensors would be hard to get into SH4.
The much more advanced Sonar can be tricky ok but i think about TMA.....

Early Cold War would be pretty cool...with all the tricked out GUPPY I,II,and III ex-Balaos and Tenchs versus Sov Whiskeys, Romeos and Quebecs.

But I'm surprised no one's asked this yet...as you get into the late sixties and beyond, how in the world would you model waterfall sonar suites and fire-control?
