Japanese ship colors

Greetings,
I noticed that the Japanese started painting their ships (both warships and merchants) a green color around midway (1944) thru the war. Why did this start?

I believe it was just for a new style/look, since there ships did not have camouflage they wanted to paint there ships green, instead of having grey like most naval ships.
