Default WWI Uboat books

Hey,

I'm actually about to start work on my Master's thesis and was wondering if any of you have any recommendations on good books about the U-Boat war in WWI. I'm steadily learning these sorts of things are not very common so this seemed like one of the best places to ask.

Right now I’m mostly focusing on campaign doctrine, just trying to get a good context of the u-boat war as a whole first. Later on though I’ll be focusing on the US’s interactions with U-Boats.

Default reply about thesis

Hi H F B,
Doenitz initially had the idea for wolfpack tactics while he was a sub captain in the Mediterranean in ww1. When he took command of U boats in ww2 he developed the idea with devastating effect. On the British side, there was a captain called Max Horton in ww1 who became commander of Western Approaches in ww2. This meant he commanded defence of ww2 convoys at the British end in ww2, so he was one of the early developers of ASW doctrine. He was influential and supposedly very good at his job. Not all his decisions were sensible; he was aggressive and ruthless which was what was required.
I was just thinking if you had a section on these 2 guys in their ww1 years and show how they used their ww1 experience it would nicely set your whole thesis into the wider context.
Hope the info helps, let us know how you get on.
