Icon11 Game: Up Periscope (1988)

Has anybody ever played the old sub game Up Periscope before? I recently started playing this game and I noticed that if you display the "big chart" while playing the game in a patrol mission, you can then move your sub to spot enemy ships very quickly instead of waiting hours to spot a ship in real-time... But does this mean its not possible to spot enemy ships unless you use the "big chart? Is it not possible to spot ships in real-time? (I want to play in real-time and just want to know if I would be able to spot ships in real-time and get a sense of realism, or if I would just be wasting my time...) Im playing the DOS version.. Please help.

Not sure about that have to check that one but i'd reccomend playing the c64 vesrion of all titles of that era rather than the PC versions as the C64 was much better in terms of graphics and sound than the PCs of that era same goes for any of the Microprose titles ie Silent Service, Red Storm Rising, Pirates! etc or the Amiga versions if you want a slightly more enhanced version.
