@ Hunter ICX

OFFLINE is a must so people wont be prevented from playing their purchased games. if I purchase software I want to be in control of it and I decide whenever I can run/play it, NOT THEM.

That is exactly why I don't have any steam games.

I will wait and see what the final product will be like and decide then. If it is online only then I won't buy it, simple as that.

Yeah, so they are indeed similar, aside from the disk part. But really, the whole "you must be connected to the Internet anyway" deal should not be any more frustrating than COH's system.

Fine. Don't buy it. Thousands of others will, myself included.

Deal with it.

You are in control. The only thing that will stop you is if your ISP goes down temporarily or if your connection goes kaput for good. And if the first one is happening, get some patience and wait for your ISP to boot back up. If the first one happens, go out and buy another connection because it's not their fault it died.

It's really not that bad of a system. The problem is people expecting all their wants to be catered to, but you will always have to give in to a few of the devs requirements if you want to game-on. It's as simple as that.

Inevitably, curiousity and temptation take hold. Seeing those juicy screenshots, I know quite a few people who are bitching about the system will give in.

A company such as STEAM that takes in that much money is probably not going to just suddenly kick the bucket over night and be shut down. I personally dislike a lot about STEAM, but a lot of the games I want to play require it, so if I want to play them, then I might as well accept it and just learn to have some patience... and discipline.

Fine. Plenty of others will. I know I'll be pre-ordering it.

I have no issue with the internet connection. I play Jutland with the DRM. Loads everytime, checks for updates and I play. Jutland will play without a connection to the net though. ROF is a must for me. However, it needs to be able to utilize two pieces of hardware I own....X52 stick and the TrackIR. Without these, all is lost concerning a flight sim for me. So, before the full version hits the markets I guess it will be a good time now to check on these two items.

Nice write up by SimHQ.

EDIT: Quick check and the X52/TrackIR are Vista supported and for the 64 bit system.

STEAM & ROF arent the same thing. STEAM requires internet connection when you install your game, after that you can disconnect the internet and it still works. Whereas ROF needs internet connection ALL THE TIME.

Hello,

well what can i say. I am somehow fascinated how anyone could spin this online issue into a favorable light.
I will most probably buy it, but this new company policy is turning into an ugly direction. I have posted my comments where it belongs, anyone who is interested can read the thread here:

I will have to bypass this one. While I have no real beef with the "phone home" verification (as long as thats all its doing) - I don't want to play online. This basic requirement with no single player makes it a MMO flight sim. I can do without that. If it had a single player mode then it would go on my "buy" list.

Hap, this whole thing has been causing a lot of confusion, so let me explain.

Rise of Flight does require an online connection all the time. HOWEVER, it has a Campaign mode, a Single Player Mission mode, and a Multiplayer mode. It's not entirely multiplayer combat...

And for future reference (as of now, that is), I posted a thread that contained SimHQ's review of the game along with some of their comments on setting it up. It discusses some pretty important things and also clarifies on some issues people have been having with the system:

What's the problem with this again? If you have an Internet connection, you're good to go. Really, it's not that frustrating...

Because maybe some people don't want to connect to the net each time they fire up a game.

When I play sometimes I just put the PC on and start. And I know that in this day and age most people have an internet connection but what if they don't and really like fightsims esp. WWI?

I think the makers are going to shoot themselves in the foot with this. It all comes down at the end of teh day to choice. People want to be able to choose whether to be connected to the net or not.

So I and a lot of other people will choose not to buy it. A shame really.

It's the same with SF. A lot of people will not buy a game now that has SF in it.

UBIsoft realised that so with SH4 went with something else.

Like said before if we are without internet for a while (longer then just a couple of days), or you would be someone with a Dial up modem (they seem to rule them out too by their requirement of a smallband 512kb/s and for the dial up user it self who cant be online all the time)

Ow its not their fault? it IS their fault for not allowing people to play it OFFLINE any god for saken game I have has an offline its a MUST its a BASIC REQUIREMENT for a game that has a Sinlge player and Campaign.
Now another thing, IF they go bankrupt...their servers will be pulled down.
then what? throw the game away? ow wait..they come up with a patch (if your lucky) so you can play it offline...so whats the fricking DEAL for not allowing it in the first place.

also lots of people still have dial up modems...they have a good computer but live in a region where they don't have acces to cable/DSL they are taking a piss on them too you need at least smallband!
its a nice attidue of a company that brings out a WW1 flightsim
they are rare and yet they are ruling some people out by their behaviour and that just pisses me off.

Until you hear about all the amazing times people who HAVE bought it are having. Then you will most likely succumb.

These arguments are almost a mirror of what was being discussed on the RSC forums regarding iracing before it went public. The true racing fans subscribed in the end.........
