Default Dynamic Campaign (running reports)

Here we go. The Battle of the Atlantic as viewed by the Kriegsmarine:

The first few weeks of the war see my U-boats prowl the sea lanes between the United States east coast and England, pushing as far as the north western sector of the Atlantic. At the same time my surface raiders (ala Graf Spree) are heading north to hunt along the African coastline.

My heaviest hitting surface ships are just west of Liverpool; while a pair of light cruisers in Leipzig and Koln prowl the waters of the Azores Islands.

It's here we draw first blood as Koln and her companion spy HMS Velox (a small destroyer) escorting a pair of freighters (1 medium, 1 large).

Tactical map shows everyones' position when the Leipzig first reports contact at a range of 20,000 yards.

Velox is doomed from the start. It's a question of a few 4.7" guns versus 18 5.9" pieces...and the light cruisers, while maintaining line formation during a series of gradual turns to starboard (to keep the advantage of their superior firepower) begin to land consistent hits at 15,000 yards.

The destroyer tries to cover the freighters with a smoke screen. But it's pointless. The German ships turn hard to port and begin a stern chase. The next several minutes see Koln kill Velox (chart table in the tactical screen helped mitigate that smoke) while Leipzig eventually chases down, and sinks, the cargo ships at ranges of 8-10,000 yards.

Waited until then to conserve ammunition.

Both light cruisers took a single hit from the enemy destroyer...hopefully no stays at port will be required.

Tally so far: 13,000+ tons in shipping; HMS Velox.

Hopefully folks aren't too bored with this. Next shots will be better.

Default Dynamic campaign running AAR (working pics)

2nd week of September 1939

Wish all I want, it doesn't change the fact that Leipzig and Koln are lightly damaged and in need of repairs. I begin a series of redeployments, the last of which sees Admiral Hipper and Nurnberg (a CL) leave Germany and risk sprinting the length of the English Channel.

The two ships, which were meant to take up the station previously patrolled by the two wounded light cruisers, run smack into a fat convoy of eight freighters escorted by, again, a single destroyer in the form of HMS Vendetta.

Hipper spies the convoy bearing roughy 40 degrees at a range of about 15,000 yards.

Vendetta is in dire straits....but this time the British have land based air support on call. While an 8" HE shell from Hipper mauls the little ship (impressive first salvo hit at 20,000 yards)...

.... an enemy bomber manages to core Hipper's 'D' turret and rob it of two of its eight guns.

Vendetta is trying to retire under smoke. There are no more enemy aircraft buzzing about. So the two German ships begin a stern chase that sees Hipper systematically murder all eight merchantmen with its forward guns. Those HE shells are just BRUTAL....and I'm managing first salvo bits at 12,000 yards after I confirm my gunners are overshooting their targets (in terms of those first salvos) by about 0.3 degrees.

Our pursuit is aided by air support of our own. A pair of bombing runs by friendly stukas maul one civvie ship to the point that it's nearly dead in the water when the Hipper cruises alongside.

In the middle of all this carnage, the heavy cruiser also applies the coup de grace to Vendetta. All Nurnberg does is trail behind and snap photos of the slaughter. Until the end, that is, when she polishes off the last cargo hauler at 2,800 yards with a pair of 21" torpedoes.

In one battle, the British have lost 56,000+ tons in shipping and a destroyer. But now Hipper is suffering from medium damage and a third German ship is heading back for repairs. The question will be, was it worth it?

Tally so far: two British destroyers, 70,000 tons in merchant shipping.

End September / first days October

Reports from HQ show we are NOT on pace to win this war...

Total tonnage sank in September hovered just shy of 130,000 tons.

A few days later, all three damaged ships have returned to Wilhelmshaven. Best estimates, Leipzig and Koln will be operational by the third week of the month while Admiral Hipper won't be combat ready until November.

If there's any good news it's that the report going up tomorrow will show I have the fundamentals down (maybe) when it comes to submarine warfare. My wolf packs are starting to score some kills....

1st week of October, 1939

U-37 and U-38 are stationed off the North American North Seaboard. A small convoy of four freighters escorted by HMS Jervis and HMS Valorous is sandwiched between the two submarines.

The challenge is the British destroyers are closing on U-37 head on. So the German subs stagger their attacks. U-38 fires first, killing a merchantman with a pair of torpedoes while U-37 closes the distance to her chosen target.

Before long, a pair of cargo ships are going down, and U-37 has retreated to safety. Yet the British were fast to come about and they're actively pinging the waters surrounding U-38 with their SONAR.

The U-boat dives as deep as her hull will allow and tries to slip away. There are some tense moments...and a single depth charge attack by Jervis....but the weather is poor, the sub is running deep, and eventually she makes good on her escape.

Tally so far: 138,000 tons and two destroyers.

3rd week of October

The Western Approaches in the dead of night. Scharnhorst, escorted by Leberecht Maas and Georg Thiele, has established RADAR contact with a gaggle of merchant ships and a lone destroyer manned by crewmen with no illusions of what's coming.

There's no need for a long write up. What's cool here are the mechanics for reduced visibility at night, the need for flares, and the ability to close on target using RADAR. The German ships come about, the two destroyers legging it up front and firing star shells once the range has been cut. The freighters are exposed. HMS Venetia tries to fight back. But first she's peppered with 5" shells. Then Scharnorst tears her in half with HE.

After that, it's academic. The freighters can manage a hair under 18 knots. Scharnorst a tad over 30. She and Thiele maul the five cargo ships while Maas lights the way. The only casualty we suffer is the odd loader stubbing his toe on a shell casing.

Tally so far: 170,000+ tons shipping and three destroyers.

3rd week of October, 1939

Back to the waters off New York, where the Kriegsmarine just aborted one attack on a convoy due to poor positioning. Seriously, if your subs start astern of the convoy, you're often SOL.

Here, an ambush of four U-boats nets some kills but also sees our first loss of the war.

U-30 manages to kill HMS Jervis by firing her fish BEHIND the destroyer, assuming, correctly, the destroyer will wheel about to respond to the freighters dying behind her.

Meanwhile, U-29 and U-39 wreak havoc before disengaging, sinking three large freighters between them. A neat trick I've picked up....maybe it's occurred to everyone else...but I jot down the torpedo bearings for multiple targets before committing a massed spread. The results are spectacular.

But U-40 never gets lined up, and HMS Venoc rattles U-30 with HE fired around the scope, causing hull damage, before finishing the doomed U-boat with depth charges.

Love this game! But I'm not exactly a sub ace. I think, too, I'll move surface ships to the waters near the U.S. I'm not getting help from the Kriegsmarine as a whole. No one else is doing anything. In a previous attempt, I saw 200,000+ tons chipped in by other commanders by now....

We're losing.....at least Leipzig and Koln are back. Time to replace that sub.
Tally so far: Roughly 200,000 tons and four destroyers.
