@Reece Sorry to hear that. So it only does that outdoors? Did you tame a feral cat?

Gentle biting is just showing some love, though occasinally the claws may get deep just because the cat feels well. But if it's all claws and biting.. if the cat is older it is probably not possible to change this behaviour. Then i would just advise to let the cat be when it's outside, and tell the grandchildren not to play or tease it, when being outside.

We got it from a house that treated their pets cruelly though it was only a tiny kitten about 4 inches long, it was clawing and biting then. Probably should have given it back!!

Well there you have your explanation, if it has been treated cruelly... but be aware that this special cat has it much better now, and it knows that. It is just trained or used to act like it does, maybe as initial self-defense.
You can win over feral or mistreated cats and 'tame' them, at least in a way they do not attack or bite, but it takes time. Shouting or throwing things at it will not work, you need a lot of patience to build up trust. It is mostly worth it

Thing is the cat is about 8yo now, has had a lot of love, fancy biting the hand that feeds it.
