Default How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Typhoon?

Apparently the answer is five Mark 48s and a Harpoon missile.

While doing the last mission of a 1984 campaign, I hit a Typhoon with a pair of Mk 48s. Then another pair after the first pair didn't send him down.. His boat's at a 45 degree angle with his bow sticking out of the water, so I fire my last Mk 48 and it hits. I finally had to get to periscope depth and fire a Harpoon at his bow before he finally sunk.

Damn, you must have had a lot of bad luck, usually I can sink him with 3 fish.

I have found it quite odd that when you force a soviet sub to throw the chicken switches, they run around with their bow sticking out of the water like that.

The durability of the Typhoon in Cold Waters is greatly exaggerated IMHO

sure, it has design characteristics which are meant to increase its chances of surviving a direct hit by a torpedo - chiefly the parallel pressure hulls - but i seriously doubt the Typhoon could survive two direct hits... certainly not a third, and obviously not 5 and a harpoon missile strike.

I have never taken one out with less than 4 hits personally.

though the survivability of the platform has never been tested in combat, there is no denying it would be a tough nut to crack... but i dont think 5 ADCAPs and a missile tough

I sunk one with just two hits. It surfaced and limped around for a while after the second hit, but eventually succumbed to damage and sunk.

I think it greatly depends on where they're hit, I've seen Tangos and Romeos shrug off a mk 48.

Must be all that raw Stalinium used to make Soviet submarines impervious to decadent capitalist torpedoes.

That's also what Wolverine's claws were actually made of.

I agree. The Typhoons were designed to survive multiple hits by lightweight torpedoes like the Mk. 46, or maybe a near miss by a -48. A direct hit by a Mk. 48 is going to be pretty catastrophic to any undersea vessel. The crew in adjacent compartments might have a better chance of short term survival or successfully completing an emergency blow, but that is probably about it. Best that could be hoped for would probably be a total mission kill, with the sub stuck on the surface and being towed back to port.

Isn’t the Typhoon basically supposed to be a boss fight more or less?

Of course, with that being said, a real 688 wouldn't be likely to survive a single direct hit from even a lightweight torpedo. Cue realism vs. gameplay discussion!
