Sunk 5 Nov, 1943 in the South Atlantic south-west of Ascension Island, in approximate position 10.09S, 18.00W, by depth charges from 3 Liberator and 2 Mitchell aircraft (VB-107 & US Army 1st Compron). 63 dead (all hands lost).

Sunk 25 Nov, 1943 in the South Atlantic West of the Congo estuary, in position 06.30S, 05.40W, by depth charges from a US Liberator aircraft (VP-107/B-6). 63 dead (all hands lost).

U-852 (Type IXD2)



Scuttled on 3 May, 1944 in the Arabian Sea off the east coast of Somalia, in position 09.32N, 50.59E, after running aground during a British air attack by 6 Wellington aircraft (Sqdn 621 and 8). 7 dead and 59 survivors.

Sunk 7 April, 1944 in the North Atlantic east of New York, in position 40.18N, 62.22W, by depth charges from the US destroyer USS Champlin and the US destroyer escort USS Huse. 27 dead and 28 survivors.

U-858 (Type IXC-40)





Surrendered at Delaware, USA, on 14 May 1945. Scuttled at the end of 1947 after being used for torpedo trials near New England.

Sunk 15 June, 1944 in the South Atlantic south of St. Helena, in position 25.27S, 05.30W, by depth charges and rockets from 7 Avenger and Wildcat aircraft (Task Group 22.10) of the US escort carrier USS Solomons. 42 dead and 20 survivors.

Taken out of service at Trondheim, Norway on 6 May, 1945. Transferred to Lisahally, Northern Ireland on 29 May, 1945 for Operation Deadlight.

Sunk 9 Feb, 1945 in the North Sea west of Bergen, Norway, in position 60.46N, 04.35E, by torpedoes from the British submarine HMS Venturer. 73 dead (all hands lost). This is the only known incident in all of naval warfare in which one submarine sinks another while both are submerged

Taken out of service at Bergen, Norway on 5 May, 1945. Transferred to Loch Ryan 30 May, 1945 for Operation Deadlight.

U-869 (Type IXC-40)







The boat was sunk on Feb 11, 1945 off New Jersey, USA in position 39.33N, 73.02W by Hedgehogs and depth charges from the American destroyer escorts USS Howard D. Crow and USS Koiner. 56 dead (all hands lost).

Very impressed by the sonar image of U-864.

You can make out that it's an IXD2 very clearly (you can make out the two half cylinders on the aft section!) Also looks like the Turm got blown off from the torpedo strike.

But after a little bit more looking at the image. I think I found the Turm. It's laying on it's side in the debris field by the aft end.

Going to save that image and highlight my findings.

Very impressive photo archive you've got U796. Still got a ways to go too, Not even in the 1000s

U-883 was the only U-boat commissioned of Type IXD/42.



Transferred from Wilhelmshaven, Germany to Lisahally, N. Ireland on 21 June, 1945 for Operation Deadlight.

U-901 (Type VIIC)




Surrendered at Stavanger, Norway on 15 May 1945. Transferred from Stavanger to Lisahally, Northern Ireland on 29 May 1945 for Operation Deadlight.
