Default U-7 on patrol, commanded by Lothar Gortziza (NYGM)

So, this is a story of U-7, type IIB U-boat, serving in 1st Flottila Weddigen, commanded by Lothar Gortziza. Career starts with the beginning of the war.

Supermod used is NYGM. I warn you that most of this log may be very boring for you as I write down courses, speed, weather etc. I hid my boat marker on the map and draw my courses and positions manually with pencil and rule. When night sky is clear and stars visible, I check my position with <Ctrl>+<left mouse button> and mark my position on map. I use hsie's and Stiebler's hardcoded fixes. I leave external camera and event camera on for training purposes (I look at my torpedo trails to learn how to target them) but not for cheating (I _don't_ use external camera for flag recognition nor watching depth charging escorts).

This is how it starts - first week of first patrol and an encounter with burning tramp steamer ;-)

September 1, 1939
---------------------
00:26 U-7. Type IIA. Leaving Kiel.
13:20 Leaving Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal. Sky clear. Rain none. Seamist none. Wind speed 5 m/s. Set course 280. Speed 6 knots. Next waypoint to be reached 17:00 today.
16:55 Changing course to 300. Next waypoint to be reached at 20:00. Weather unchanged.
20:00 Changing course to 270 - to sail south of Helgoland. Next waypoint at 14:00 on Sept 2nd.

September 2, 1939
---------------------
14:30 Weather deterring. Wind speed 7 knots. Clouds overcast. Storm is coming.
19:00 Continuing on course 270. Clouds overcast.

September 3, 1939
---------------------
12:58 Received radio message about commencing hostilities with Britain.
21:45 Clouds overcast. Rain none. Wind speed 10 m/s. Speed 5 knots.

September 4, 1939
---------------------
Strange troubled tramp steamer appears.
00:41 Spotted ship. Probably tramp steamer (length 70 beam 10.7 mast 22.7 Draft 8.2 tonnage 1780). Flag not visible yet. It has small fire on bow. Trying to chase. Speed 10 knots. General course 80.
01:10 Came to about 1200 meters. Continuing chase. Ship may be British but need some more light to identify. At 1:17 ahead flank.
01:27 Overtaking it. Ahead full. Ship seems to be zigzaging. Now on bearing 180. Storm is closing.
01:45 The fire on ship may be spreading. Now it seems like it has two sources of fire on deck. 1:54 fire visible both on stern and bow. Decreasing speed in order to not lose contact. Visibility worsening. Silhouette of ship not visible now - only fires. 1:58 turning back to course 244 as target seems to have slowed considerably or even stopped.
02:10 Submerging. Coming to closer to have good attack position at dawn and identify the ship's nationality at close distance.
02:39 Surfacing as target is getting away from us. Fires are not visible now. Trying to decrease distance again. Speed 5 knots.
02:54 Sudden flash on target's deck observed. Explosion? Increasing speed to 8 knots to close distance.
03:08 Second huge explosion. Target is sinking without our action. Flag floating on surface reveals it was British. Changing course to 270.

And we are back on course.

03:29 Speed 3-4 knots.
22:15 Changing course to 290 to reach patrol grid. Accelerating to 6-7 knots. Time of arrival to patrol grid estimated September 5th 16:00. Wind speed 10 m/s. Clouds overcast. No rain.

September 5, 1939
---------------------
00:30 AN8132 Sky clear. Wind 3 m/s. Checking position. Far south off estimated position. Course corrected to 310. Speed 7 knots. Should be in patrol grid September 5th 17:00.
06:27 Dived to 30 metres for aircraft. Changed course to 234. Speed 4 knots submerged. Sea bottom at about 50 metres. No air attack followed.
06:47 Returning to course 310. Speed 4 knots submerged.
10:03 Periscope depth.
10:11 Surfacing. Wind 3 m/s. Sky clear. Speed 6 knots.
14:34 Battery recharged. Speed 7 knots. We should in patrol grid around 18:00.
20:00 Changing speed to 6 knots for most economical usage of fuel.
21:00 Changing course to 270. Weather good.
23:15 AN5667. Course 270. Next course change at 7:30 Sept 6th. Sky clear. No rain. Wind 3 m/s. 23:50 lightnings in the distance.

September 6, 1939
---------------------
01:15 Wind 15 m/s. No rain. Speed 4-5 knots.
07:30 Wind 15 m/s Clouds overcast. No rain. Speed 4-5 knots. Course change to 0. Next change of course at 13:30.
14:30 Course 220. Next waypoint at 20:30. Speed 4-5 knots.
23:20 Course 90. Speed 4-5 knots. Wind 15 m/s. Clouds overcast. Next waypoint 16:00.

September 7, 1939
---------------------
14:15 Wind 10 m/s. Speed 4-5 knots.
16:00 Wind 10 m/s. Changing course to 310. Next waypoint at 24:00

Yeap, the crew is reading a lot and playing cards during these three uneventful days of patrol ;-)
