Default Das boot: Directors cut or original?

Which edition of Das Boot would you recommend? I have not watched it since I was young, and I plan to buy a copy. But which edition is best?

The DC, hands down. The sound quality has been improved and that is worth the price of admission right there. Bonus if you have surround sound.

Why stop at one when you can have both and compare for yourself?

I think the original miniseries version is best, but the director's cut is a nice middle ground and better than the original theatrical version. I know that's a strange thing to say about something that is some 4+ hours long, but I actually prefer the pacing of the longer version.

I've got the uncut version, but I haven't worked up the courage to watch it yet. The Director's Cut is probably your best bet, but you might as well get the uncut version as well, if you can.

Without a doubt the original uncut digitally remastered version:

If by original you mean the 2.5-hour theatrical version, the 3.5-hour Director's Cut is far better, for the extra footage as well as the improvements McBee mentioned.

If, however, you mean the 5-hour 'Original, Uncut' version (AKA 'Miniseries'), then get that one. The extra hour-and-a-half gives so much more character development that changes everything about certain of the crew. I prefer that version so much I gave my DC copy away.

Here's another vote for the original mini-series. I have all 3 versions. I first vied the theatrical version and was impressed, but the DC is a very well done re-mastering and edit with superior video quality and sound, and does expand the characters a bit more than the theatrical version. That being said, the miniseries, although not fully re-mastered to the extent of the DC, really fleshes out the characters, the plot, and the drama far more than the other, truncated, versions. If you really only want to buy just one version, get the miniseries...

That's the one. Don't be fooled, though. It's not cut as a miniseries (I wish it was), but as a single 293-minute movie. It is, however, worth the $40 or so I paid for it when It was released eleven years ago.

I have the directors cut and I think it's pretty good but never knew there was a longer uncut version. I will have to look for it.

i have them both and well its a hard choice, the extra footage and the better sound quality is a bonus on the directors cut. but then again if you like films with their grainy crackly sounds well then the other one is more preferable.
