Good hunting!
The fleets do start at port and sail to the battle and return to port in the majority of cases.

That's interesting reading about RSRDC historical fleet we may encounter...but what about single merchants, if i may ask?
Hoping they are still working!

EDIT: never mind...had the answer in other thread with Armistead...

The good thing about RSRD and battles, if you study up enough, you can decide better ambush points to intercept TF. Most look just in the area of the battle itself, sometimes it's better to intercept it leaving port or in a narrow strait, etc..

Course, many enjoy being in the actual battle as often many planes are involved, surface battle, etc.

That ambush tactic is what I did off the coast of San Cristobal, May 5th 1942 ... I got one of two carriers and evaded the escorts.

Now, THAT is nice to know. Especially for the Battle of Layte Gulf. Of course, it could be considered 'cheating' to know exactly where and when the IJN will be.

Not really. We had patrols out all the time looking for task forces.

Should I report the TF contact first, then try for an attack, or vice versa?

Generally, you have to get close enough, like 7000 yds or so, before you can ID the group and send a contact report. Could be pretty exciting if you're spotted, or they pick up your radio signal. Which is most important - report or attack?

Unknown at the time, the Japanese had VERY good optics.

Depends on the mods you use. Usually, to report groups your crew has to get a visual on a ship in the group not an escort, can be difficult to do with TF or well escorted convoys.

Armistead ... if you take out a carrier or any ship of a TF in port or simply coming out of it on their way do you know if it will completely eliminate them from the battle or will they simply re-spawn at a given time to be at the battle in accordance to history?

If you totally lose contact with the group and make contact with it again, any ships sunk should reappear. However, there may be a time limit attached to it, because I know I've lost contact, regained it, but not by much and a ship sunk wouldn't be there.
