Just pulled off a successful convoy attack in my new VIIC. 2 Large merchants sank, 8500 tons a piece. Conditions were night time, choppy and overcast. Instead of just charging into the convoy like I have been, I think I'm going to shadow convoys until nightfall if time permits from now on. Any thoughts on that matter?

I'd say that's a very smart move. Attack on the surface, ideally with your depth set at 7m so only the conning tower is above water, and try to face the escorts directly until just before you need to get into firing position, as this will cut down on your silhouette.
Good luck and good hunting!

Basicly after encounter I turn my bow/stern towards the convoy and start taking readings for +/- 10 min to know it's course and speed. Followed by contact report. Then I move away from the convoy so that I lose it from visual range. After an hour I'm waiting it in predetermined position. Repeat until night sets in. Requires time and PATIENCE.

I like night surface attacks on convoys they really get the adrenaline going. However, from mid 1941 onwards they become increasingly difficult. You cannot slip as easily between the escorts and the convoy as the escorts spot you from a long way off and there are more of them to deal with. When they have radar it's even harder. I'm currently playing in mid 1942 with GWX and submerged attacks are becoming the norm.

A tactic I used to use up until end of 41 the last time I played the game seriously a few year back, was if in front of the convoy I would dive to a good depth, run silent and then surface in the middle of the convoy and let them have it with bow and stern tubes. Then dive deep and let the convoy roll over me whilst creeping away.
Had some success with this but do not know what it will be like trying to do it with the GWX mod.
