SSI's Panzer Commander.
I LOVED this game back in the day, however i find that its not playable on my system anymore, even using things like VM (win98) and dosbox its just not playable, crashed or its messed up.
is there any other game out there that does what panzer commander did? i.e. allowed you to stomp around in those old klanking steel beauties? thanks pete |

2. Steel Fury (WWII era, not so complex and realistic, small scale battles, little modding activity)

What about SSI's venerable Steel Panthers? Is that still playable?

And the answer is "yes". It is free downloads for both the WWII and the modern MBT versions if you stick with rsolutions up to 800x600. If you want higher resolutions, you have to buy the game-CDs. It is not the original SP, but the series has been constantly tuned, modded, and developed until this very day, and finally brought to Windows platforms. It is much better than the original now. I still play SPMBT.

For tactical WW2, you also have Combat Command, and Panzer Command: Kharkov (Mobuis' Panzer War computerised).
I've played the former, but the latter should be good too, the underlying ruleset seems to produce sensible results as a miniatures game, without too many 'game mechanisms' interfering with a consistently 'engineered' rule set. |

Since you want to be in them and not above them, the tactical ones don't seem to be a fit. And since you want them old then Steel Fury is probably your best bet.

Now if they could just bring back that gripping 'Desert Fox' tank game I played back in 1978.

Be aware that there are two Steel Beasts: the old version from ten years ago (Steel Beasts Gold), and the new version (Steel Beast Professional - Private Edition). The latter is recommended. The first only if you are not sure and want to testplay before investing into that two-games price tag of SBP-PE. All you need is in the stickied resource thread at the top of the forum thread list.
