Fun fact: "Milazzo" was sunk by my High School friend's ancestor (yes, Ritter von Trapp, the "Sound of Music" guy).
Her sister ship "Volturno" was also torpedoed and sunk, shortly before the war ended.
As you said, there were bulk carriers back then. Often they looked a little bit like oil tankers, with a superstructure way up front and the smokestack all the way at the back. Italy, Holland, and Great Britain all had this type of bulk carrier.
"Milazzo" and "Volturno" were technological marvels for their time; they were huge (11,400 GRT) and had very advanced cargo handling equipment. They had dry cargo space and tanks for oil. There was even a miniature railroad installed to unload cargo. It's too bad they did not survive the war.
