Edit: finished out the Civil War quests last night, with the Battle for Solitude.

Funniest moment, on the way up to the gates of the city to meet Ulfric and the rest of the troops, I see a group walking up ahead. Looks for all the world like one of the standard "three soldier, one prisoner" groups that you run into all over the place. But as I get closer, I realize the nearest individual to me, who is bringing up the rear of the group, is wearing Elven armor.

ROFL it's a group of Thalmor Justiciars with a Talos Worshipper prisoner and for some reason they were leading him right up to the city. While it's under attack by the Stormcloaks. Bad timing, they haz it! When I get up close I see that the patrol has stopped just a ways up past the guard tower right there by where the carriage usually is, and they are just standing there looking around at the catapults and fires and burning wreckage of various things. They all have their backs to me so I plant the Axe of Eastmarch right between the shoulders of the nearest one. I mean, WTH, any bounty I have in Haafingar is probably about to be cleared anyhow.

So then me and Erik the Slayer - who is ADORABLE, btw - finish off all three Thalmor and I set the prisoner free. I'm running around collecting their loot when a Solitude guard comes walking up the side road from the stables and of course he's gone hostile because of what I just did, he's already got an arrow drawn to take me down. I decide to ignore him and just run on up and meet Ulfric. Erik decides to kill him, so, um... okay. Didn't really want to kill any guards today or ever, but bounty about to be cleared, fine, let's just move on.

But when I get up to the main gate... no Ulfric, no Stormcloaks. WTF I think, I go into Solitude and they are already inside the gate, just standing there. So apparently when I was chasing those Thalmor around I got close enough to the waiting Stormcloak troops to trigger the next part of the Battle for Solitude, and everybody just went right on in without me. Well, I'm not doing the battle without hearing Ulfric's Big Speech, fortunately I have a save in the Stormcloak camp right before Galmar sent me up to take the city. Reload, I think this time I'll make sure it goes off without a hitch.

Lol, we head on up the road, same Thalmor patrol, same spot and everything. And I mean, there's no way I'm NOT killing them, right? Managed to do it the second time without having to deal with any guards or fouling up the opening scene of the battle for the city. Nice because I wanted some armor off a Justiciar for my trophy room anyway and what better time and place to get it?

Anyway - took Solitude, war's over, more speechifying, talk to Ulfric, get told I'm free to roam again -

HA THAT'S WHAT YOU THINK ULFRIC I HAVE AN AMULET OF MARA AT HOME WITH YOUR NAME ON IT AND A "MARRY ULFRIC" MOD AND I'M NOT AFRAID TO USE IT

- but anyway I figure I'll just follow Ulfric to see what he does, if he's going all the way back to Windhelm I'll just pretend we're his personal guard escorting him. But he just goes out the city gate and apparently just stands there indefinitely. There's a horse parked down the path a bit which I guess is supposed to be his. But I waited and waited and he doesn't seem to be moving from that spot. Bummer because I'm sure I read where someone followed Ulfric on the road from Solitude to Windhelm or vice versa, just to see what happened along the way, but I've never seen him outside the Palace except for scenes where he's scripted to just pop up somewhere else.

So finally I give up on escorting Ulfric back to Windhelm and just head on back to the camp, suddenly I hear Erik draw his weapon and then out of nowhere a dragon roar. We are still on the road and it goes back and forth between us and the camp. We both get a lot of arrows in it while it's hovering to attack the camp. It finally drops to the ground on the road near us, by this time one of the horses from the camp has run up to tank it but it's almost dead anyway and one of us got a final arrow in it and it died. No doubt the soldiers in the camp got some shots in as well that we didn't see.

It was remarkable to me because that is the closest I have ever seen a dragon come to attacking Solitude... I never see any up around the city proper, I think Dragonbridge was the closest attack in any previous game. So it was really a surprise.

It might have been the one that we heard while passing through Fort Snowhawk on the way back to Haafingar, that's the fort NW of Morthal on the road from there to Dragonbridge. I was passing by the fort when I heard a dragon roar, it was nighttime so visibility was limited, I went up top of the battlements and went all around looking in every direction and couldn't spot it. It would get quiet and I would start to leave and then it would roar again and sound closer than before. This went on for almost 20 minutes and I was actually afraid to leave the fort because I really thought an attack was imminent. It was just so eerie, I hated walking away when I could still hear that dragon roaring somewhere and I had no idea where he was. Could've been the one on the mountaintop lair overlooking Morthal but if so that roar was really echoing down through the valley and it was SCARY.
