For me when shadowing a convoy contact messages got the response "sending available subs to your area" which they did, "Investigate and keep sending status updates" et cetera and the occasional "good job". Also something like "keep to your current objective and stay undetected" so somehow message scripts do seem to work in relation to actions in the game.
