If you eschew the look, feel, and smell of cardboard, there is always Columbia Games'
Pacific Victory. Nice chunky wood block counters (which mask your deployment and keep track of losses), lower counter density (less than 100 blocks), and playable in well under an entire lifetime. Strategic issues are well represented.
