Many items in the movie were based on reality. The truck was inspired by the
Bowfin knocking a bus off a dock. The toilet paper memo was copied from life. The incomplete paint job and sinking at the pier were both based on (I think)
Sealion. She was sunk at the dock, and in the process burned the black paint of a nearby boat, leaving it with the red undercoating exposed.
