Default KTB Patrol 2 // U.-Gelhaar

Sat., 16.12.39 - West of Ireland

0235 - Qu. A M 7325 - Surfaced for venting the boat. Weather still bad, prevailing freezing rain. Boat is covered with a layer of ice within minutes after surfacing. Visibility is very poor.

1200 - Qu. A M 7385 - Days Run: 75.1 sm - ↗ 27.2 sm - ↘ 47.9 sm
98 cbm. 5 Eto and 9 Ato. ENE9, Sea8, heavy swell from south, overcast, <1000mb, freezing rain, poor visibility, 0°C
Sunrise 1134 - Sunset 1906

1322 - Qu. A M 7388 - Sound contact bearing 117°, on course 85° true, slow, E=19000. - 1332 - Surfaced and veered the boat on heading 0°.

1432 - Qu. A M 7385 - Diving and moving boat into attack position on heading 175°. Sound contact of surface vessel stb. ahead. Silent running and Battle Stations.

At periscope depth I can't make out anything, even though according to the sound operator, we should be at a distance of 200m to the steamer. Also, the periscope is freezing over from the rain and splash water. I break off the attack and resume submerged cruise on heading 180°, at A-40.

The second week of this operation lies behind us. It was characterized by heavy southwest storms, that pushed boat and crew to its limits. The further south we cruise, the greater grow our hopes for better weather and many rewarding targets.
