U.S. Army Major Harold M. Clark Jr. and Sergeant Robert P. Gay make the first inter-island flight in Hawaii, flying from Fort Kamehameha on Oahu to the island of Maui. From there they fly to the main island of Hawaii, where they crash on the slopes of Mauna Kea. Uninjured, they will wander for a week before finding help.
