Their justification was the fact that for part of her journey Graf Spee was disguised with a false second turret, which I believe was mentioned in the movie. On the other hand the false turret was butted right up against the superstructure, couldn't turn, and only had two barrels.

My personal favorite part of the movie is the flurry of messages at the end which convince Langsdorff he doesn't have a chance and must scuttle his ship. I thought that part was portrayed brilliantly.

Battle of the River Plate by Dudley Pope, and as good as the film is the book is even better.
