Icon14 IN HONOR OF THE DAY! HAMPTON ROADS! 3/9/1862

The inside (replica)of a very circular battle ship-USS Monitor) History's first serious naval arms race inventions:; decks awash, a revolving turret (24 second to completely revolve ) 5" turret armor;
(<really works check those dents!) .05 deck armor-with steam hoses to repel boarders??!! ...literally a 'cheese box on a raft'... a review of Ericsson's unusual design, the board was skeptical, concerned that such a vessel would not float, especially in rough seas, and rejected the proposal of a completely iron laden ship. President Lincoln, who had also examined the design, overruled them. Ericsson assured the board his ship would float exclaiming, "The sea shall ride over her and she shall live in it like a duck" The world would never be the same: Her 'shake down' cruise was enroute to the great encounter with the CSS Virginia ie the Merrimac <These guys were the pointy end of a great experiment...that actually worked. Two Swedes: John Ericsson and ADM John Dahlgren (inventer of the Dahlgren 11" guns <11'' Dahlgren; the intended 15'' Dahlgrens were not available in time-Lucky Merrimac!) together put 'paid' to the wooden-world of warships-USS Monitor the direct ancestor of the predreadnoughts and the dreadnoughts. By 1862-same year as Hampton Roads battle-navies across Europe had adopted ironclads. Britain and France each had sixteen either completed or under construction... ATTN Moderator: a little wordy but I'm just trying to generate more sales to help fill 's coffers! [wiki et al]
