yes, that crew member has "special abilities" over and above what a normal crew member has. the after-battery-room is a reference to a safe area of the boat. depending on what mod you are playing there may not be a safe compartment on your boat. it is not david-thompson specific. as you play out your career, you may have additional crew acquire a special ability. look for that to occur when you promote a crew member to chief or from CPO to commissioned officer.

some skippers like to operate with crew that have special ability and some, such as captcrane, do not. the choice is yours.
