despite the best of marketing, development, etc, Microsoft operating system memory management is not what it should be after 30 years of experience.

Feeling fresh today, I did just that. I rebooted the machine, then ran Smart Game Booster, ended any non-essential processes, loaded SH4-FOTARSU, and started the patrol from scratch (in the office). This time I didn't mess around with replenishments. By the time I got to the passage between the Celebes and Sulu Seas I had used all but eight forward torpedoes. Passing through that channel I was almost run over by a IJN TF. They left the channel minus one Nagato BB and one Mogami CA, plus two escorts. I took a hit from one of the DD torpedoes, suffering 12% damage but no injuries to the crew. Turning back for base the next morning I scored two more merchants.

Rather that head over to Halmahera this time, I instead went straight back to Perth-Fremantle. Surprisingly, instead of getting beat up by the Admiral, he awarded me a Navy Cross for my 96,000+ tons.

I think you guys were exactly right. Memory leaks were definitely at play. Something else that I know Propbeanie is hopefully going to fix are the enemy air patrols. In that entire stretch between Bali-Lombok and the Luzon Strait, you cannot run in daylight on the surface for more than 10-20 minutes without being forced to dive. Judy's have x-ray vision at night, spotting you in the dark at ranges that defy logic. Bettys can't see you that far in broad daylight on a clear day. I will run on the surface at dawn until radar picks up the first plane, invariably heading straight for me. To avoid the constant harassment, I dive to 100 feet, set my speed to 1 knot to conserve battery, and stay there until about one hour after dark. It's a pain in the ass and maybe more suited to a U-boat in Biscay Bay after mid-1943.

So the volume of planes must have something to do with cluttering up things, but I think MB you are right. One would be wise to run a clean machine before each new patrol, and perhaps starting out from a Save game. Back to the planes, I question that real life skippers ever encountered that many air patrols hour after hour, day after day, and almost without exception heading dead at them. You can fake them out a bit by changing speeds after one of them spots you. If next time you surface and go faster the next plane will often pass behind you - go slower and it may well pass in front. I think the AI notes your speed and builds that into the algorithm for the next planned encounter. But that's just my theory.

One more thing - even though I loudly protested the limitation of 2048 TC, I am finding that exceeding that with any game complexity at all may lead to a CTD. So I'm trying to be a bit more patient and go with the current speed limit. Frankly, being humble doesn't suit me, but I'm starting to develop a taste for feathers, if you catch my drift!
