STALKING ULFRIC STORMCLOAK
Part 2

Having reached the northwestern coast of The Pale, Ulfric decides to spend a few more hours near the shoreline, just taking in the scenery and perhaps meditating on recent events and his place in the world and no doubt considering the possibility of taking out a restraining order on this Stormblade chick.

"Oh gods why won't you just GO AWAY?!?"

Once again I scouted ahead, only to return and find he had moved on without his trusty escort in tow. Caught up with him on the path east of High Gate Ruins, where I found him about to engage in a battle with multiple fierce opponents. At first I could only see two giants and a mammoth, but from their behavior it appeared that they were already fighting someone or something else. They soon decided to include us in the general melee.

When all was said and done...

...I couldn't be sure just who killed who, but the final death toll based on a quick looksee around the area was two giants, one mammoth, three bandits, and two frostbite spiders.

Now you just stand there, young man, and THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU DID.

And so he did, long enough for me to run due east all the way to Dawnstar and sell off some spare gear and buy supplies. I had also scouted the area to the southeast as well, clearing out a hidden Imperial camp in the process. Apparently I took a bit too long with all of it, or else he had great faith in my ability to clear the path ahead for his safety, because at some point he once again headed off on his own, making along the path southeast through The Pale until he hit the main road that runs east and then south and then east again towards Windhelm.

It was during this leg of the journey that we were ambushed by what turned out to be a Boethiah cultist bent, I suppose, on murdering whoever came along. Being at the forefront of the party, Ulfric handled that one almost all on his own... but I made a mental note to investigate this clearly dangerous cult and, if possible, teach its members a thing or two.

I also had to deal with a Nord warrior of unknown allegiance who had the audacity to try and shoulder-shove my good Jarl off the road when she approached from the opposite direction. Ulfric, being consumed by thoughts of more important things, like whether or not he'd remembered to tell Jorleif to have his "good" loincloth cleaned and pressed just in case the Stormblade woman was a goer - because she might be crazy but you know what they say about the crazy ones, amirite? - ignored the insult and breach of etiquette but I simply could not let it go. When stopped for questioning the woman extended her insults to my own person as well and when cautioned about her attitude she attacked and I was forced to take her down.

Finally we reached the easternmost part of The Pale, and the shores of the River Yorgrim. I was a bit surprised when Ulfric began to wade purposefully across the river far to the west of the bridge below Anga's Mill, but when I followed him as duty demanded and heard his battle cries echo through the night ahead, I knew he had simply detected a dire threat to the people of his beloved Skyrim and gone to remove its foul presence from the land.

And so it was... for as I arrived to see him looking down at his slain foe, uttering with barely concealed contempt the words "That'll teach you to cross me," I knew full well that - whatever else the future might bring - the good people of my homeland would have one less mudcrab to worry about.

(I really wish I had screencaps of that, but I was just too hard to take any.)

At any rate, he returned to the road and walked on. Just east of the mill, he once again waded into the water and headed for the southern edge of the river. My gods, I thought, what has he sensed this time, lurking in the depths of the night, ready to wreak havoc on his country and its fair inhabitants? Another mudcrab? A half-dead skeever? A malcontented goat?

Nope, he was just crossing over to the path that leads down to Windhelm on the other side of the river.

Seriously, man, WTF? There is a bridge JUST UP THE ROAD.

Then, at long last: Windhelm.
