Default Command: Aces of the Deep on WINE

A few years ago I had installed Command Aces of the Deep from my 20 year old "Aces Collection"...

I was running WinXP at the time and couldn't ever get it to run, except WITHOUT sound.

Which anyway you slice it, is just wrong.

That was on my last PC, I've had to play "musical hard-drive" several times, but I still had it "installed" on the drive. Since all my game CDs are in boxes that I can't reach right now.

I copied it over from my "backup" directory to my current "H:/" oops, err, I mean my "H:\" and decided to try it.

I had read tips concerning running CAOD on WinXP, so I decided to follow the same basic advice.

At this point, anyone not slightly familiar with WINE may get a bit confused.
I'm running it through a *32bit prefix, with DotNet 2.0, and DirectX9 for newer games, I run SH3 and 4, and Silent 3ditor from this "prefix". 16bit games (if I remember right) need a 32bit prefix to run.

I set ALL ".exe" files to "Windows 95" in Wine Config, and I ran "AODCD.exe" with wine....

AND IT STARTS!!!! VICTORY! sortof,
let's check the AOD "museum"...
IT WORKS! YES!
wait a sec, don't get too excited...
Now let's try a "single mission", "convoy, check, no escorts or planes, check...."

IT RUNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!
Ok, let's do what we always do when we don't remember the buttons to our old game, push all the buttons you do in SH3, because it's just a prettier version of CAOD, right?

And.... we have sound! Or at least voices... click the engine telegraph, "ding, ding!"

NOPE, we DEFINITELY have sound! "Periscope up!" Wait, how do I do that again....
*clicks on scope* *Bzzzt* It's up!

And that's when it hits the fan.... I have black all around the periscope... Try the UZO, and SAME THING!!!

WAIT!!!, it did this unless it was set to 256 colors....
Nuts, now how do I do that in Linux/WINE?????
Ohh, I have to use one of these paths....
https://wiki.winehq.org/256_Color_Mode

And I'm too tired to go messing with my system this late at night... I'll try once I've had some sleep and (hopefully) update this once I've tried a few of those options.

But I'm closer to playing CAOD that I've been since I stopped using my 486 SX/25mhz!
Just thought I would post an update about running this on newer hardware.

* A "WinePrefix" is a directory that "fakes" a Windows install. Providing a "C: drive" and a "Windows" and "Program Files" directories, and a Registry.
