Been a while since I read
Bedford, but I don't remember her getting torpedoed. Instead, the West German commodore sabotages one of the ship's missile launchers, destroying the Bedford - I guess the idea was to hide the embarassing truth of what happened lest both sides learn the truth and start WWIII.
