Steering in a type 7 was done in the conning tower.. not in the command room. Also they used plungers to opperate the dive planes and not wheels. http://www.uboat.net/gallery/index.h...95D&img=29 you can see the 2 plungers inside the ring.

For steering they didn't use a wheel neither.
