Imagine getting really dressed up to attend a homecoming dorm kegger and you've got the basic idea of the annual Submarine Ball.
About a year after the Red October story, we got word that the famous actor Tony Curtis was really One Of Us and would be attending the sub ball in Pearl. He had served on a fleet boat out of Pearl during WWII, which was neat but wasn't all that important.
What WAS important was finding out that his charming daughter, Jamie Lee, would also be attending.
We had a full Navy captain brief us that if
any of us tried anything with Ms. Curtis, the Navy would not discipline us. That would be reserved for Mr. Curtis, in a parking lot of his choosing.
