Because when you fly too close to eatch other. Your asking for it almost.
There is a reason why the RAF practically stopped using tight "wingtip to wingtip" vics of three and started using the more loose finger-four a la Luftwaffe. Flying in close formation means most of your attention is focused on the leader and you're not very effective in observing and spotting the enemy. Collision risk is also there, even more so in IL2 than real-life thanks to lag. Also if you're bounced you don't have much room to maneuver.

Close formations are for airshows, and there's no reason at all to fly one in combat.

One exception: It's allowed when you want to scare the **** out of an FW190. Nice one Gotta love IL2's AI too. "Me is Oleg's AI the "returning home"-mode, me doesn't react to anything!"
