I overlooked the post.
From what `ve heard the Naval Pack version of SC is different to the original release + 1.08 patch, which could explain the issues.

My first install left me with bugged interfaces on custom ships. My working install now was achieved by launching the scu/scx simple installer right from the sc install folder with admin privileges, and launching the ship changer with admin privileges. But perhaps I did a unrelated mistake on the first install without noticing.
I myself got an old EA games copy from Amazon for a couple of bucks exclusively to play SCX/SCU without the limitations.
