High command is sending me radio messages about convoys but without telling me the position of the convoys. The message says convoys X-Y-Z is heading "east" (or some other compass direction) but without position on the map this info is useless.

All GWX-messages (that i'm aware of) telling some of interest have Position-Area included. Example: "@BdU@|1940/09/15|All U-boats in grid square AM intercept convoy in AM 19. No escorts. Attack without further orders." This means Patrol Area AM 19. There will be no Mark on the Navigation-Map. You may set youre own Marker.
Another example: "@BdU@|U-123|1941/08/12|Reinforce action against convoy. Grid CF37."

How do I plot my intercept course if I don't know the initial position of the convoy on the map?

You can't. If there is no Area incude, then this message may be not for you.
Greetings.
