Even if a movie has no subtitles, you can apply these yourself, as long as someone has been kind enough to do a translation and it's available on the net. The format for these files is .srt
Using a file like 'VobSub' will put then on the screen for you. At least on avi files. I'm sure their is a mthod for DVD's also, rather than having to convert your DVD to DivX or avi format. The VobSub method I use frequently for Thai and Korean films.
