Saw The Dark Knight yesterday - it's everything the hype says and more! Dark, deep, disturbing, not 'camp' at all. It digs down far into the reaches of the soul and squeezes hard. Heath Ledger's final performance is fantastic, which is not to criticize any other actor - they all deliver the goods. The true beauty of this version of the Batman story is that, while some of the situations are still hard to swallow they go all out to convince you that these are real people, not just characters in a story. It is so layered and nuanced that I'm going to have to see it at least a couple more times - not to enjoy it again but to catch all the little things.

Trying hard not to give away one single little spoiler:

The best: Ledger's Joker delights in being what he calls "an agent of chaos". More than once he leaves people in the position of having to make a choice, and it's a toss-up as to which outcome will be worse - there is no 'good' choice.

The worst: well, there is no worst, it's all good. I'm just a fan of the Batman, and some of the best stories in the comics have been the quiet detective stories; and that's not easy to do when audiences want bigger explosions and cooler toys.

My favorite: there is one scene in which someone totally unexpected, a person you would classify as 'bad', becomes an unsung hero. I can say no more.
