There are some beautiful community-created models for Sub Command. Hopefully someday they going to be available for Dangerous Waters...DWX, anyone?
Now that I've finally bought a copy of SC and had a chance to download SCXII it was easy to figure out how to import the AI sub models into DW.

1. Run the SCXII.exe but for your target directory send the files into an empty folder.
2. Once SCXII.exe is complete, go to the destination folder and copy the all the contents of the SubCommand/Graphics folders into your DW/Graphics folders.
3. In your DW/Graphics folders run the Install_Graphics.bat file that you just copied into the folder.
4. Now launch DWEdit (AFTER backing up your database file just in case you mess up)
5. Go to the 3DObject Dialog and re-reference the models you want to the SCXII models. (If you don't know what SCXII model names were then fire up SCEdit, go to the SCEdit 3DObject dialog and reference the file names
6. Save your work and launch DW.
7. The models you swapped should in visible in the USNI Refence 3D previews. (Note that platforms you haven't created in the database file won't have a 3D model unless you creat a platform and assign the model of your choosing to it.

The Akula I and II import pretty good. Except that your sail view puts you forward of the fin on the sub deck!... still its a nice view. The LA and SW views put you inside the fin which is unfortunate, but the price you pay for a better 3D model.

You should be able to get your Typhoon ingame using the method above. Hope that helps.
