The cargo steamer SS Canastota departs Sydney bound for Wellington, New Zealand; however, the ship disappears with its 49 crew. It is likely its large cargo of “benzine” (petrol or gasoline) caught fire and exploded.

Canastota (United Kingdom) The cargo ship departed Sydney, New South Wales, Australia for Wellington, New Zealand. Presumed foundered in the Pacific Ocean with the loss of all hands. Fire-damaged wreckage from the ship washed up on Lord Howe Island, New South Wales on 10 August.
