U.S. Army Sergeant Anthony J. Marchione was the last American killed in air combat in World War II.

Not a useless fact IMHO!:

On 18 August 1945, he was in a flight of two B-32s, aboard a B-32 (tail number 42-108578), of the 386th Bomb Squadron, 312th Bomb Group, flying out of Yonton Airfield, Okinawa. The mission of the unit was to photograph that the Japanese were in compliance with the ceasefire. It became readily apparent when the group was attacked by Japanese aircraft as they crossed the shoreline over Japan. (The missions on the previous day had the same result.)
