The less governmental influence or regulation there is, the sooner it happens.
See Rockefeller, or the gilded age. Or see big oil, Microsoft, the car industry, now Facebook.
True, monopolies can be overcome by technological advances, as long as progress is not being hindered by the very companies who still want to sell their, and only their stuff. See: Oil and car industry.
But in the longer-lasting meantime, it is the common people who have to pay, and sometimes suffer.
