The Swordfish airplane some 550 sm from the Irish west coast can only mean one thing: There must be an enemy Aircraft Carrier operating in the area. Even though, the airplane did not drop any bombs, I must assume that I have been spotted. Having operated in the ordered patrol zone for one week, I decide therfore, to head west.

After one week in ordered PZ, no traffic found. 6.9., 2320h, Marqu. A L 9646, diving from Swordfish aircraft, suspect enemy aircraft carrier. I retire to the west. 80 cbm, 9 Eto, 5 Ato. W5, Sea4, light westerly swell, clear >1000mb, light haze, good visibility. "Gelhaar"

Boats of the 6th & 7th Flotilla ordered back to base, except for 'U.-Heinicke'. The remaining boats are distributed in groups in front of the northern entrance of the Irish Sea. All issued 'G 7 e' torpedoes have been adapted for angle shots.
