But it is highly doubtful that the Iranian's would operate their Kilos in the Gulf. There are large portions of the Gulf where the depths don't exceed periscope depth and others where it is only as deep as the length of the submarine. The map clearly shows a "submarine training area" northeast of the shipping lanes, placing it in striking position of commercial shipping. The map doesn't show the naval base at Bandar-e Abbas, where the Kilos are currently based at. Google Maps clearly shows a Kilo docked there...along with a good portion of the Iranian Navy.
