I can't help with your crashing, but I can say with certainty is that
any antivirus program can miss the bad stuff. Even if you had every latest AV product under the sun something could get by unnoticed. Most exe stuff can be a virus, but take heart in the fact that most of them are not. Chance is on your side that it's harmless.
Maybe sys spec and mod list could help people identify the issue.
