In a second wave of airstrikes, the British battleship BB3 HMS Valiant was damaged by torpedoes shortly before the Italian TFs converged on the British Task Force 3 as it was sailing line ahead.

Caught by surprise, outnumbered and out of position the Royal Navy takes severe damage. BB3s HMS Malaya and HMS Ramilies are sunk, BB4 HMS Rodney taking more hits is damaged, the other battleships taking minor hits.

The italians took only minor damage in the one-sided encounter.

The British turned around and headed back to port. The Italian fleet returned as heroes, and Malta continues to starve
