Winter 1940

Battle of El Alamein

In the first major ground engagement between Axis and Commonwealth forces, the British government is claiming an important victory.

The initial assault conducted by Italian forces on well dug in British Commonwealth lines was repulsed with heavy losses.

German forces followed on with a massive armored assault that broke through the South African held lines, but did not have the strength remaining to get through the British armored forces. In open combat in the desert very large numbers of tanks on both sides were destroyed.

But with too few remaining forces to reinforce the breakthrough and with the southern flank threatened by other British forces, Germany eventually decided to pull back all forces.

Britain loses 3-4, 2o5
italy loses3-3,2-3
germany loses 4o6, 6aaf
