New aircraft carrier for France to cost 8.5 billion USD

Hard to believe with the economic problems of the present day coronavirus that a country would expend the huge amount of funds needed to produce such a vessel, but our country is also building them at a record pace.

Makes me project the thoughts that when finished they may very well be used in a global conflict. :yep:

France to build new nuclear-powered aircraft carrier

Quote:

PARIS (AP) — France will build a new, nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to replace its Charles de Gaulle carrier by 2038, French President Emmanuel Macron announced Tuesday.

One of his advisers noted that having an aircraft carrier also helps France project its global influence. Only a few countries in the world maintain the huge, costly vessels.

The new French aircraft carrier will be about 70,000 tons and 300 meters long, roughly 1.5 times the size of the Charles de Gaulle, which has been deployed for international military operations in Iraq and Syria in recent years, according to French presidential advisers.

Its catapults will be electro-magnetic, and American-made, and the ship will be designed to accommodate next-generation warplanes and serve until around 2080, the advisers said.

They didn’t provide a price tag but French media estimate it will cost around 7 billion euros ($8.5 billion).

Its not surprising however this is early stages and by then corona will be but a page in the history book.

Generally this will be a 10-15 year R&D plus design phase before any steel is cut, i also think they have understated capability here.

They state its a vessel that 300m long (20m longer than the British carriers) yet carries less aircraft.

The CDG has some way to go before being decommissioned and this new carrier like the CDG will likely be a one off, that said there's still time to revise the design.

Most ships that are in build usually we find they are already having designs made up for the replacement, take the T45 DDG before the last one hit the water work was already under way on its replacement.
